Wrap a paper towel or cloth around the spool with rubber bands-keeps the particles out of the thread. If the hole is small all the way down the spool, go as far as you can from one end, flip it over, and go from the other end to finish it up. Just have a good firm grip on the spool while doing it, or have husband/boyfriend/bodybuilder muckle onto it while you drill it out.
