This is a recording of the Shostakovich Symphony No. 5 with Rostropovich
and the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood. It is significant for two
reasons. Rostropovich was very close friends with Shostakovich and this
performance takes place on August 9, 1975, the day Shostakovich died.
Listen to the intro to hear the radio host and Seji Ozawa announce the
news. The recording was derived from the live radio broadcast and has never
been commercially available.
It is certainly not a definitive performance of the work, but is very
intense and of historical interest. I have also included a PDF of the
program and a PDF of a Boston Globe article from days after the concert.
