Just two changes from what Emily sent over:
- I've added italics and brackets to make this sentence clearer. It was the two
'ands' without clauses that could have tripped people up in my last version, as
we're not making a distinction between inner suburbs and stations. I also think
it flows better with the word 'Here' retained, but happy to remove if you
disagree:
Here it is useful to distinguish between inner suburbs (which evolved around
public transport corridors and stations) and post-war, car dependent outer
suburbs.

two questions without bullets:
The conference will bring together experts from across the sustainable

Here are my notes from today:
1. Taking Forward the Strategy
We looked at the points in the strategy that have tentative deadlines in the
next six weeks and assigned roles for those, rather than allocating long-term
director roles/titles.
The exception was that Ian agreed to be Treasurer.
Emily agrees to oversee any brand changes. She plans to produce something to
review by the end of September.
Gill wonders whether Don might undertake membership strategy/review? We'll ask
him on his return.
Randall to put together paper on legal structure options, pros/cons,
implications.
Additional roles: marketing person, training/events (Gill can help on that
one), academia (Kate Pangbourne:

Ian to review regional structure.
Randall to seek additional Regional Reps via announcements in e-bulletin and to
membership.
2. Annual Conference Announcement
Randall will upload Emily's edits today. Ian replied after the meeting that it
reads well with Emily's changes.
Randall will announce that we'll be holding TravelWise Week awards (category
for local authorities and another for others e.g. schools, companies,
hospitals).
The Annual Conference venue is fixed (Macdonald Burlington Hotel). The website
CMS has a field for 'region', which is why it says Midlands. We can write
anything in that field, however.
Emily raised the need for participatory activities at the conference. Randall
said that he's suggested to Transport for New Homes that they include something
in their session e.g. small groups come up with key points to raise in response
to a fictitious planning application. We could ensure that we get a 30 minute
activity for each of the four sub-themes (which each have 90 minutes in total).
We don't tend to receive proposals for activities, so we'll have to be
proactive and be prepared to organise these ourselves if necessary.

At the Act TravelWise Annual Conference on Thursday 30 January 2020 in
Birmingham, our theme centres on transport solutions specific to the geography
of where people live – emphasising the need for different strategies to address
the needs of town and city centres vs inner and outer suburbs.
Town and city centres have always long been a focus of sustainable transport
initiatives, as interventions there benefit everyone, including visitors.
They're where amenities are most concentrated, where alternatives to car use
are most viable, and where the highest levels of air pollution and congestion
are found. – if well designed – people will want to meet their friends and
spend their free time. The trend of repopulating city centres continues apace,
led by the under-30s.
However, although still only 4% of the UK population lives in city centres. In
our efforts to reduce car dependence and achieve our ‘net zero’ climate target,
we must also turn our attention to focus on the places where most of us live –
the suburbs. With up to 51% of the UK population living there (depending on how
suburbs are geographically defined*), suburbanites deserve a larger share of
the attention in the sustainable transport arena. Here we have a distinct
difference It is useful to distinguish between the inner suburbs that evolved
around public transport corridors and stations, and the post-war, car dependent
outer suburbs.
In the context of With ambitious government targets for new home-building, we
must avoid ‘building in’ car dependence in new development. This would means
creating higher density, mixed-use development rather than isolated housing
estates with few amenities within walking distance. It also means targeting
brownfield sites for new development, as this reduces the pressure for outward
expansion.
The conference will bring together experts from across the sustainable
transport and planning worlds to explore: how should sustainable transport be
integrated into city centres, inner and outer suburbs, and what can we learn
from successful strategies already in place?
Call for Papers:
We are seeking presentations on innovative, successful transport strategies
implemented in any of these four areas:

Reflecting on last year’s conference and remembering the feedback, I’d like to
see more participatory activities this year, as a rotation of presentations can
make people lose attention by the afternoon! Randall, perhaps you could expand
the line about proposals for participatory activities to include a couple of
suggested areas and/or activity ideas, such as Ian Bewick’s parking management
one last year, to get people thinking.
I note that the location is simply ‘Midlands’ – where are we on confirming the
hotel as the venue?

I'll just need to add the sponsorship options to that page. SYSTRA is
considering sponsorship again and Transport for New Homes has agreed to oversee
the session for one of the four sub-themes.
Last week it was decided to have an award presentation at the Annual Conference
for TravelWise Week/EMW UK participating LAs (and presumably 'mobility actions'
undertaken by others e.g. companies, schools etc). There will be a panel to
evaluate the award nominees, after shortlisting. We won't be able to fully
discuss the awards further without Don, but we can announce it at least. Those
eligible for the award would need to register on the EMW website.
