Tek Talk provides an explanation and demonstration of APH Talking PC Maps,
software developed for the American Printing House for the Blind by the Sendero
Group. Designed to be used by individual consumers, orientation and mobility
specialists, and teachers of persons who are visually impaired, this software
provides spoken and on-screen map data and more than 12 million points of
interest for U.S. states, territories, and Canada on one flash drive. It speaks
on any computer, using WindowsT XP or later whether or not the computer has
screen reading software installed. It does not give information about a
user's physical location; it is not a GPS system. Instead, it gives a verbal
description of physical space and what it contains that is available in no
other way except through eyesight. It gives persons with visual impairments
the same information available to sighted persons through incidental learning
when they look at maps, street signs, and signage on buildings.
This software allows you to explore streets in your neighborhood or across the
country; discover restaurants, recreational activities, hospitals, schools and
hundreds of other types of facilities in your area or elsewhere; create
pedestrian or vehicular routes to and from addresses and points of interest;
and do much more.
