VIBRATING SHOES

Guide dogs could soon be replaced by vibrating shoes, scientists claim.

The shoes, which could be on the market next year, have been made by
researchers at Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Miniature ultrasonic equipment fitted into the toe caps acts as an echo
sounder by transmitting a beam that reflects back off obstacles ahead. The
Sensors
are linked to a vibrating device on the shoe and the closer the object, the
more the shoe vibrates.

Scientists are now developing a device which will tell the wearer where they
are and in which direction they are walking.
