Ok, I've read it all and understand the basics of what it does and what it's for, but it doesn't answer my question about what the average number should be. Has anyone any ideas? is the higher the better or the other way around?

Have found this page for starters on using Ping and Tracert. Some of the values, particularly for pinging a distant computer look a bit low but the way the commands work and what they do is well explained.
