Hi Steve
Not only does the Amazon Echo pair with an iPhone and iPad, it will also pair
with any Android phone. It really is a piece of cake to pair. I even did it
unintentionally by reading out a previous email to my wife.
While I'm at it, the app, though a bit of a pain to use, is definitely not
sufficient cause for me to return the Echo.

Steve,
I can assure you that the Echo is a bluetooth speaker. Just say “Alexa pair
with my iPhone” and in pairing mode she will go and you will then find it
appear in your bluetooth settings for the iPhone.
I assume it would be a similar process to pair with any other mobile phone.
I’ve got my Echo paired with my iPhone and it works really well. Just use the
rotor to select which audio source you want the iPhone to use.

Hi Pete,
I don’t believe the Amazon Echo is a Bluetooth speaker. I certainly can’t
connect my phone to it.
I think the Dot and Tap are though.
All the best

hi alistair,
the dot is available from amazon in the UK.
i have both the echo and the dot and apart from their size and speaker volume
they are both capable of doing the same things as to regard of how you
control them and the skills you can install.
the main differences are that the echo is around 9 inches tall while the dot
is only 1.3 inches, the echo has 2 buttons on the top the wake button and a
microphone mute button but the dot has 2 more buttons on the top volume up
and down.
the dot also has a 3.5 audio out jack on the back which the echo does not.
they both have bluetooth, which i haven't used yet, but i think the
difference is that the echo's bluetooth is for connecting to smart phones and
such like so you can transmit the sound from the phone via the echo's speaker
while the blutooth in the dot is just for transmitting from the dot to a
bluetooth speaker.
i'm sure your grandson would enjoy either as there are hundreds of skills
that you can install allowing you to do varying things just by speaking to
them.
you can ask it anything you would normally look up in an encyclopedia, ask it
to solve a mathmatical problem, ask about the weather or ask about places in
the world and much much more.
i have been quite supprised by just how loud the speaker in the little dot
goes and i haven't bothered connecting any external speaker to it either
wired or by bluetooth.
obviously the speaker in the echo is much louder but unless you want to use
it as a replacement for a hi-fi the dot is more than adequate for asking
questions, using as a timer/alarm clock or even as a bedside radio/music
player.

I’m aware there has been considerable discussion about this product on list
and I note that the echo has a baby brother, I think it is “the dot”? As I
have a blue tooth speaker already would there be any difference in
performance between the dot and the actual Echo? I have searched Amazon but
can’t see it listed as a product, is it available in the UK? Also, and
lastly, lol! Would there be any educational value for young folks? My
grandson is 8 extremely bright, (don’t know where he gets it from) and is
very tech savvy and has a enquiring mind!
thanks
