As long as they have sufficient charge in them, they do not need to be plugged
in to charge when you connect to the iPhone. Just have them in the case, open
the lid and press the button on the back of the case for a few seconds until
the iPhone says that it is connected.

Hi Ian thanks for this but can you just tell me is it ok to lie them in the
case down. the only reason I say this is because I am trying to charge them
both but when I lie them down on the desk near my iPhone the lid shuts and it
says that they are not connected. Hope that makes some kind of sense. Janet

Janet, the trick is to put the AirPods case close to your Apple device during
the pairing process. Then look to find them in the Bluetooth settings list and
double tap to connect.
