I believe the button is also to reset the case as well, in case the buds don’t
charge.
I have just been introduced to this, as I have the PixelBuds for my Google
Pixel, and they work on a very similar vain.
The quality of the PixelBuds is excellent, but I don’t know the quality of the
Airpods, although I will find out soon, as my wife wants some.

It is on the back, about a quarter of an inch from the bottom edge and feels
like a circular pattern.
