Hi John

Which device did you set your marker for the steps with? Are you able to name the waypoint?

Hi John,

CyberEyez is what I used to use, but it is no longer being developed for us outside the US.

You can't find steps though with any of this tech as far as I know.

All the best

no of course steve same hear but my one example for gps is hear at woodlesford station where it is not manned the train will pull in to platform one. so, when you get off the train to find the actual steps to go up out of the station they could be either towards the front of the train or towards the back of the train. what i did is put a waypoint where the steps were so sometimes i would walk towards the front of the train only to find the steps were then behind me. if you had something like the orcam or envision could it be enhanced to how you would find these small steps leading up off the platform to then get out of the station. my other way of doing it was to ring someone who could see through my camera to where these steps would be.

i remember you saying how good i t was to look around you with one of these devices it could have been the orcam not sure. i must get one of the harness devices that pete has and if and when this virus goes away give it a try.

Hi John,

I don't currently use anything but my phone when out, but I am not out much since the pandemic either.

hi steve very interesting with regards to the gps aspect of the special players even if this new device comes out surely now with the new phones the gps on the phones is more up to date than any specialised gps for the blind.

i have just seen specs about the new garmin gps touch screen device which sounds rather good but, i am not sure if we would have access to them. < BR />
for me i can see both sides of the coin so to speak i must say though because i have the android phone and the i-phone both these devices can do all i want podcasts reading books and the satnav.

as you know i am very interested in the lidar maybe as a mobillity tool for a blind person though i feel that having your phone in a harness rather than using expensive glasses could be the way to go.

so, my idea would be to have your phone in the harness whereby the camera can see in front of you and then you would have either bose glasses for the sound or the new apple glasses that will come out soon.

for me and this is just personal something like the orcam though very good and the envision are fantastic devices for some but again just for me it costs so much and again with blind tech how will it cope with updates as things move on so fast.

i do wonder steve when you go out do you use some kind of glasses to see what's around you.

this new player could take three years to come out just like the talking tv box it's always in front of you b ut never quite hear yet.

Hi,

I'm on the opposite side of the fence here re specialist players.

I recently discovered, yes I really did not know this, that Dolphin EasyReader will synchronise your reading posi tion across devices, much like Audible.  This is really great, since I have an iPhone and an Android phone.  I can now hop devices and pick up exactly where I left off in a book.

No specialist player can offer that versatility currently,.

I would like to say publicly, well done to Dolphin for implementing this.  Now if only they would implement Chromec asting a book, or using Air Drop for iOS, that would be mega.

Bye Bye specialist players with out of date tech for me personally.  I will always sell them though where I can, while people want them.

All the best

Steve

Hi David

I a gree with you on all points.  I think the voice used on the Trek is vile, but I appreciate it is subjective.  The Evo10 voices, Ivona Brian and Amy, are much nicer to listen to, and they sound better on the Evo than they do on the Fire tablets ironically.

I think the Wi-Fi connectivity on the Trek could be much improved, I wouldn't like to hang around downloading a book!

But like you David, I will stick with specialist players as we personally find them more convenient despite their cost.

Kind regards,

Jackie Brown

Very interesting.

I did not know about the plan s for a new camera enabled Trek.

Where did you hear this?

I did suggest to them some time ago that they should consider going the extra mile and converting the whole thing into a blind Shell Classic type phone device.

The point about galileo  is that I was assured that my existing Trek was already galileo enabled  when I purchased it.

However my latest understanding is that it will be useless for us in the UK anyway as Br exit has entailed our withdrawal from the EU galileo GPS project.

It will not therefore be available in the UK. I ronically it may be that the Canadians   have a better EU deal and that they may be able to still access galileo.

The las t time I  read about this is that Boris Johnston was loftily saying that we would, in the UK, build a "world class" alternative to galileo  that would triumph as an global option for us to market. Presumably as we have apparently supposed to have led the world in C ovid Track and Trace management! I would not hold your breath on any support for this future alternative being supported by the Trek though.

In terms of the improvements I would want  to see with the Trek I agree with steve  that the Wi-Fi connectivity needs significant upgrade including support for modern 5Gz routers.

The sound chip, although better than the first VR Stream model could also do with some further improvement. The Trek does n ot deliver to my ears at least as good a sound as the Evo 10 players now do, though both the Stream and trek are clearly far better Daisy Player in terms of firmware.

The Evo 10 is far better than the Trek at eBoo k playing.

I don't know if the Evo 10 has 5GZ support but it certainly connects faster and more reliably to Wi-Fi than the trek.

I am committed to the Specialist players/navigation devices so I will probably continue to purchase both the Evo and Trek incarnations.

I guess my dream device would be a device which has the keyboard of the Trek, firmware of the trek, sound chip, wi-fi connectivity and eBook reading of the Evo and the phone and app support of the Blind shell Classic.

Not too much to ask for!

hi Andy,

check thoroughly as humanware are bringing out the new victor reader trek but not sure when it will be available.

it has a lot of improvements on the existing version including having a camera in it, a better gps chip that will work with the galileo satellite system and do ind oor navigation.

they described that wh en wanting to be guided to somewhere that is in a building the gps would get you as close as possible, then the camera would take over to guide you right to the door and beyond.

they've taught it thousands of different types of doors and windows and such like by taking photos so that it can easily recognise different things.

pete.
