Hi Amro - Well, I just tried that keystroke on this Vista machine [haven't come across it before] and it made a loud buzz, and then there was no speech. I used my hot key to get JAWS loaded again, and although the volume mixer had master volume up full, JAWS was pretty quiet for a minute or so, gradually getting louder, until reaching full volume again! It would seem from this, that when the machine actually does hang, and I get that clunking sound with each key press, that doing a JAWS dump using the keystroke you told me about, wouldn't do much good, as I've nothing then to read whatever is on the screen - Andy ----- Original Message ----- From: Amro Bilal <mailto:amro_bilal@xxxxxxx> To: access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Friday, January 16, 2009 9:48 PM Subject: [access-uk] Re: Can't shut down! Hi Andy, kind of. Does the Jaws memory dump command (insert Windows Key F4( when that happens work? If it does, try to read the Windows task manager dialog and see if there's a program in the background causing your computer to hang. Dump Jaws, restart it using the shortcut key you specify and then try to assess what is going on with your machine rather than forcing it to shutdown. Just a thought... hope that works... Hi Amro - Yes, by then, speech has gone from both JFW and narrator, every key press just produces a dunk sound, have you never never experienced this?- Andy ----- Original Message ----- From: Amro Bilal <mailto:amro_bilal@xxxxxxx> To: access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Friday, January 16, 2009 3:28 PM Subject: [access-uk] Re: Can't shut down! Hi Andy, do you mean that you lose speech when that happens too? You can try Alt Control Delete to check if there's an application that is not responding and causing your machine to behave oddly. Hi George and Ibrahim - I understand about the long press of the power button to force a shut down, but I was hoping there was another way of rebooting or turning off when the problem I outline occurs; I'd be interested to know what if anything is on the screen when I get to the point where every key press produces a dunk sound, I seem to recall under Win98 if this happened, alt control delete would reboot the machine, all that's has changed now! - Andy ----- Original Message ----- From: Ibrahim Gucukoglu <mailto:ibrahim_gucukoglu@xxxxxxxx> To: access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Friday, January 16, 2009 4:43 AM Subject: [access-uk] Re: Can't shut down! Hi. Holding the shutdown button should only be a last resort if the system won't shut down normally. Forcing a shutdown can damage data and corrupt windows if it is done too often. ----- Original Message ----- From: George Bell <mailto:george@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Friday, January 16, 2009 1:50 AM Subject: [access-uk] Re: Can't shut down! Can't be 100% sure, but on most systems, be they desktop or laptop, or even netbook, you have to hold down the power on key for 5 - 10 seconds before it will power off. Just keep your finger on it until it dies. If it has not powered off after 5 minutes, put your finger in your ear, and go to bed. (Smile!) George. ________________________________ From: access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of ANDY COLLINS Sent: 15 January 2009 23:58 To: Access-UK Subject: [access-uk] Can't shut down! Hi all - This use to happen on my desk top, and I never did get a solution for it, but it is now happening on my netbook; after using the machine for a little while, something goes wrong, and key strokes stop working, the most obvious being the Windows key, when I press it, instead of geting the start menu, absolutely nothing happens! If I press the Win key and M for the desk top, nothing happens, and eventually, no matter which key I press, I get a dunk sound, and can only use the power button to shut down. Does anybody know of a way round this, so I don't have to use the power button to force a shut down?
