Hi Tony
The Echo and Dot use a USB lead which goes into the device at one end with a
Micro fitting, and a standard USB fitting at the other. The latter part
fits into a plug which then goes into the wall. When you turn on the power
at the wall, wait until you hear the Echo or Dot play the welcome tune, and
Alexa will start speaking. It is at this point that you need to go to your
Alexa app and set up your device, signing into your Amazon account, and
choosing either Echo or Dot. Alternatively, you should be able to do this
on a PC or laptop if you have wireless connectivity.
Once you have connected the device to WiFi, you can then start activating
the Skills, either on the app, (good luck with that,) or your computer at
the website
http://alexa.amazon.co.uk
The beauty of the Dot is that it has a 3.5mm socket in which you can plug a
lead to use on a hifi or similar system. So far, I haven't done this as I
have put the Dot in our bedroom. In fact, I set an alarm for 6.30 every day
so Alexa can wake me up if my dog doesn't!
There is a serious side to using the Echo or Dot in addition to the fun once
you grapple with the app, or better still, use the website. I agree the Dot
doesn't have the depth that the Echo does in terms of sound, but its price
for me is more sensible, and it does offer that option to plug it into
another sound system.
There are plenty of Echo or Dot owners on here if you decide to purchase one
and get stuck. But it is pretty self-explanatory. I didn't get off to a
good start when I purchased the Echo as the app drove me mad, and I sent it
back. But now I have opened a lot of the Skills, and steer clear of the
app, I like it much more.

I'm interested in you getting the Dot as I too may go that way, hooking it
up to my home speakers.
"setting up Alexa" you say so do you need to do much for setting up the
basics or is that basic a default?
I may purchase the Dot before the end of year and in time perhaps get a
mobile version too, but maybe not rush in.
I assume those devices have USB ports as I don't think my computers have
bluetooth.

I don't have a smart phone but only a laptop and a netbook so I wonder
are the Echo and Dot usable with them?
