I think that it's fascinating what the tech allows us as blind people do and even achieve without too much hassle apart from, as I glean, the little bother of setting those devices up but when we do we do wonder how we ever had the bother in the first place, :) smile.

Thanks to Mod for allowing this very interresting and informative thread continue as lon as it is.

Hi Tony

It uses TuneIn, so if you say: "Alexa, play BBC Radio Two," she will.  I
have also activated RadioPlayer which offers local stations as well.

Alexa needs an Internet connection at all times, but you could probably take
her to someone else's house and set it up on their network.  I don't know
how many networks it would remember though.

I too think Google Home will be interesting when it hits our shores.

Thanks Jackie.

The question about out and about then is a no no for me then there but I
like a lot of what I read of it.

I'd really like to have internet radio on it so can one install a radio app
to it or does the device need to be paired/connected to something else apart
from WiFi for the radio? ?

Apart from all of that I may wait a little longer before purchasing as I'd
like to know more about Google Home when it arrives.

Best with the new toy, :) smile,

Hi Tony

I returned my Echo because I hated the app, it drove me bananas to
start with.  But I decided to purchase the Dot, one because it is £100
cheaper, and two because it has an audio connection that lets you put
it through a hifi system or something.

So it arrived this morning, and I've had a lot more fun with it this
time round.  I set up the Dot with the Alexa app to start with, then
went to alexa.amazon.co.uk

This is much easier, as you can add Skills and search for them much
quicker.
I found the app very stuttery, and wasn't always able to double-tap on
icons to move about properly.

I like the size of the Dot, which I will use as an alarm clock.  This
means I don't need to have my iPhone in the room overnight.  I
couldn't say for definite whether you could set up the Dot or Echo on
the above website without a Smartphone, but I would think it is possible.

Both the Echo and Dot are mains only powered.

Hi folk,

Thanks for the interesting and sometimes even amusing LOL posts here
recently.

I don't have a smart phone but only a laptop and a netbook so I wonder
are the Echo and Dot usable with them?

I wonder also as I have mobile broadband does the Echo/Dot work
anywhere as long as I have my wi Fi enabledor say if out and about using
other Wi FI?
Finally do I need to download Alexa or is it there by default and
using the Echo or Dot have I then accessx to internet radio?

Best,

Tony Sweeney.?
