George, have you looked at the range of easy-to-use mobile phones sold
by RNIB?  Even if your mum-in-law doesn't have a sight problem as
such,
one of these might be more suitable as they lack a sophistication of
features.

Can anyone recommend an el boggo, simple, uncluttered, phone which is
just a phone, can perhaps send and receive plain, simple text
messages,
and ideally has decent sized buttons?

My aged mother-in-law (80 ish) does want a camera, radio, MP3 player
or
any of that rubbish.  She simply wants a phone to make and receive
calls
with, and receive text messages.  She's not even too bothered about
sending text messages.
