Am I right in thinking that your Visioneer scanner is not in the list of
preferred scanners? If this is the case, does anyone know what I am
looking for when deciding whether a scanner will be compatible.

I've never owned a scanner before can't you tell?!!

I use a visioneer 9020 flatbed scanner, which works well.
