that's a very thoughtful and interesting message you sent Mark.

Targeting UK customers? Now, what will that mean, exactly? Could UK
customers be given a shot of rootkit virus to put them in their place?
Well, God, or whatever you believe in, help you if they start going at you
with that. RK's can be very difficult to get rid of.

downloads

Hi listers,

If you take a trawl round the net you will find that allofmp3.com is now
firmly in the firing line for the copyright protection organisations in the
UK and internationally. Indeed, it was referred to in the deliberations of a
Parliamentary committee. About a month or so ago, it disappeared for a few
days, but then returned. The only difference, so I'm told, is that they now
charge VAT at the Russian rate of 18%.

Given the difficulty of pursuing them through the Russian courts, the
strategy may be to go after individuals in the UK who use it extensively. I
saw a figure quoted saying that it accounted for around 14% of UK music
downloads, which would obviously upset the likes of iTunes.

Allofmp3.com charge for bandwidth, with the amount paid depending entirely
on the volume of data downloaded. Thus, the higher resolution you choose,
the more it will cost. The complaint of the copyright organisations is that
they are not licensed and do not pay royalties to artists and performers. It
may be legal to download from within Russia, but probably not from the UK.

That said, I agree entirely that it is a fantastic site. I've struggled to
make sense of iTunes in the past, and think that Apple should hang their
heads in shame by comparison with allofmp3.com, which has been built in an
environment where the supposed protections of diversity and discrimination
legislation probably don't apply, but is still relatively easy for any blind
person to use so long as they have a reasonably competent screen-reader.

Not only is it accessible without anyone having to write specialist scripts,
but it offers an unrivaled degree of flexibility. It encodes music in the
way that YOU choose, with the user having the option to select the encoder,
the format and the resolution. If only other music sites were half as good.
The choice of music is limited in some respects, but they do add around 40
albums a day.

Perhaps the best advice is to tread with care and don't be surprised if it
transforms into a higher-price fully legal service at some stage in the
future. Whatever happens, it would be a huge shame if such a big collection
of music and such a flexible service was to vanish altogether.

Sorry for the extended rant, but it's a subject I get quite wound up about!

Mark
