Hmm, it would be a shame to lose this.
I would get in touch with Google, or at least post on the forum, explain
the app, usage and who the target market is, and just get them to see what
can be done.
I reckon you might get somewhere....

NotNav/NowNav makes heavy demands on the places API, as it queries for
all nearby places as you travel. A while ago I did takes steps to
ameliorate this, but I have no control over older versions of the app
already installed on devices.
I do wonder if sighted users drive around with NotNav reading out
nearby places.
