Mandy, if you can get what you paid for it then selling that laptop and
going for a dell to yur own spec may be a better solution in the long run.
You could even sell the CD drive either separately or with the laptop and
get some of the money back from that as well.

Let us know what kind of router you have and I am sure that someone here
will be able to help you with instructions about how to make your network
more secure. Give us a kind of idea also about what devices you use on your
network. The security needs to be appropriate so that any important devices
can still access the network. The main thing you want to avoid is casual
passers by using your bandwidth and internet connection. it is likely that
they will not be particularly harmful in most cases but be ware as you never
know.

Connecting the PC to the rooter involves simply connecting a network cable
between your PC and the router. Most if not all wireless Routers also have
the option to connect your PC to the router by cable. You use a network
cable to do this. One probably came with your router and once it is
connected to your Pc, it should spot this connection automatically. to do a
real test of how this is working, once the wired connection is up and
running, disable the wireless access on the router so that you are just
using the wired connection. this is always going to be more reliable then
wireless and would always be the better choice of connection for computers
used in a fixed position if near to the network points. Once you have
assessed the wired connection, turn on the wireless connection again if you
or anyone else on the network will be further away than the router and need
to access it wirelessly.

Graham

We have an unsecured network: when I use my Toshiba it always says
signal low but when a friend who uses a Sony came over she had an
excellent signal from same room. How do I change from unsecured to
secure? I have nobody to help connect the laptop to the router but
anyway this Toshiba seems okay although with low signal it does often
say there might be limited or no connectivity to the internet and does
say a network cable is unplugged" from time to time.

Perhaps I am giving it up unnecessarily but now I am hooked on the idea
of getting a dell to my own specifications.

Mandy.

the main thing to look at is how you connect your laptop whether you
stick
with what you have or whether you buy another. if you have a wireless
router you should connect your laptop to the rooter with a cable to
check it
is not a problem with the wireless link.

While the laptop you bought through ebay is not the fastest in the
world, it
certainly should be fast enough to use the internet and download things
as
well as playing audio of various kinds.

Hi Graham.

I'm not sure about most of those things: however I've made my decision
now and am going to resell the Dell on Ebay and try to buy a dell to my
specifications with the money I've been granted that I was originally
going to use for Window-Eyes which I have decided not to buy after all.
Well it's a woman's privilege to change her mind but I've Told those who
gave the money and explained why.

Thanks for the reply though.

Mandy, I don't think the speed of the laptop should have much to do with

whether or not it stays on the internet or not. can you hardwire it in
to your rooter using an ethernet cable?

when you install JAWS, does the whole laptop run slowly? try editing a
word document for example.

How much RAM does it have as well? in my experience, you need at least
512MB of RAM.

The graphics are likely to share system memory as well so you may need
to make sure that as little as possible memory is used by the graphics
chip. it may be possible to control this in the BIOS.

Cheers

Mandy,

Before you dump the laptop, think about other problems that may exist.
My new DELL laptop wouldn't stay on the internet, or knocked everything
else out wirelesssly, but it wasn't the laptop so much as the older
router, coupled with the separate wireless add-on that did it. Now I'm
very happily using anything from BrailleNote to my fast laptop and not
so behind desktop!

If you want the one computer to do everything however, including the
download of these large music files, then of course you may have made a
blunder; but sell it on and get on! That's all you can do.
