Hi Andrew,
In the version of Word I have(2016) if I go to File, Options, Advanced under
the General section there is an option that says allow opening a document in
draft view. I believe turning this option on will always open documents in
that view.
Other than that I suspect you will need to open normal.dot/dotx and set your
view in that file then save it.
Kind regards,
Stewart.

Hi Stewart
A great link. I've now got 'draft' on my view ribbon, but I wonder how I get
it to always open files in draft mode, as opposed to having to click it each
time?
Thanks for your help so far.

Hi
Do you have to select draft mode each time you open a document or can it be
set to a default?

Hi all
When I open an existing MS Word document I move down the file and it
jumps from page 1 directly to page 3. I go in to VIEW mode and
change the setting to display just one page and this solves the
problem and I can get to page 2. However, I don't know how to
ensure that all MS Word files open like this, with out reverting to
the process of having to change the setting each time I open a
document. Any help about how to make the change permanent, please?
Andrew
