Can it also be used to take down a number that someone is telling you over
the phone?  I guess that they would have to hang up so that you didn't lose
the number.

Telephone banking is one such time. Automated call steering is another,
press one for this, 2 for that etc.

I am curious, or perhaps a little dim, but why would you need to dial a
number whilst on a call?
