I see a parallel in the word of digital technology in general. Look how
companies like Blackberry and Amazon have added speech output to their products
and assumed that's all they need to do to make the gadgets accessible to blind
people. In the case of Amazon, there were inherent weaknesses in the design of
the Kindle Keyboard and the speech output. The parallel is that, as in the case
of echo location, if they'd asked us, we could have told them, pardon the pun,
straight off the bat, much of the information they must have spent a fortune
researching and got it wrong. Compare their approach with Apple, who seem to
have sussed it, by and large. In both cases, a lot of time, effort and money
could have been saved if they'd first asked the people with the most direct
experience.
