Hi
I believe the discussion mentioned Google lookout which is a app very similar
to Seeing AI from Microsoft. Google Lookout has a facility to identify many
products from their labels not just using a barcode. I have tried this with
several similar looking tins and it recognised each and everyone correctly.
True these were tins of boiled sweets from the same manufacturer but I love the
concept of just being able to hold the tin up to the camera at any angle and
for it to make an educated if not always completely accurate guess at what it
is. If this is what Google calls a beta, I can’t wait to see the end product :-)

Steve, will Google Lookout only work with Android phones, or can the poor
iPhone users get it either on the phone or a Windows device?

Hi Shane,

I think Google Lookout has gone one better than bar codes.

It's only in beta now, but what it does is take an image of the whole
product label, not just the bar code, send it up to Google and gets you the
product information.

Take a look it's free, and I believe it's the future of product
identification, not using bar codes specifically.

All the best

Steve

Subject: [access-uk] Finding Barcodes on Products

Hi everyone,
I just published a blog post about how to find barcodes on products, and
thought you might find it useful. I use several iOS apps to scan them, but
the most frustrating part is doing that efficiently. To try and solve the
problem, I braved the supermarket for an hour and figured out some general
rules about how to find barcodes quickly.
Let me know what you think!
