I have been using Tiscali for about 1 year and not experienced problems. They are presently upgrading their service as well and offering speeds of up to 8 MB for £17.99. I have not taken up that option.

Thanks Graham for taking the trouble to comment on the services
offered by these particular ISPs.

My current ISP (UKonline) cannot offer me a broadband service at a
competitive rate because I am on a rural BT exchange which they do
not cover, so I am forced to look elsewhere. Plus.net is in fact
near the top of my list of possibilities and what you say encourages
me to study their web site further. Having used three ISPs (Demon,
Onetel and Ukonline) in the last 4 years, I am anxious to make the
right choice for a move to broadband.

a few people have said they have problems with plus.net but I and others

You can sign up online, but not on the phone. Go to www.plus.nett

For £21.99 a month you get virtually unlimited broadband and a fax to
email service which lets you have a fax number beginning with 0870. If
someone sends a fax to this number it is emailed to you as a graphic which
you can scan using OCR software such as that provided with Microsoft
Office 2003 or you could use something like Kurzweil 1000 if you already
have it.

Again, Tiscali
offers fast connections at low prices which on first glance seem better
value than the Plus.net offerings but some have reported difficulty with
severe slow downs at peak times. go to www.tiscali.co.uk to sign up. I
think you can sign up over the phone as well as online.

Demon internet,
www.demon.co.uk
offers a service similar to that offered by plus.net. It is slightly more
expensive but it is not as well known these days I would say though it
used to be one of the most popular brands. I tend to think of Demon as
being quite reliable and the company has technical support for visually
impaired people given by a company called Apart consultancy.

I used to use freeuk at www.freeuk.com
this company is fast for dial up connections and good to have as a
  backup.
I did tend to get a lot of junk mail though.

A broadband connection is also available costing 322.99 a month, (£22.49 a
month if you pay a full year in advance).

you get basic web access at only 512KBits/sec so it is now looking rather
slow for the price. This is not a big company though so it does not
suffer as much from network congestion and mail problems as it is
generally not targeted by hackers etc as larger companies. The webmail is
particularly accessible.

Hope these jottings help.
