hi Steve,
yes their pretty impressive and will only get even better.
bar code recognition is coming via an update, as is controlling the glasses
with your voice.
from what i understand it doesn't use the standard google tts voices and
instead they had to write their own voice, but again they will be bringing out
further tts voices in an update.
it was very impressive to take them out of the box and for them to read hand
written material with a high degree of accuracy i would estimate at least 95%.
but their 2 weakest points are the built in speaker and how quickly the battery
drops when in stand by.
the speaker is not very loud and would be a problem if in say a supermarket
with all the background noise, but i got around this by purchasing a small
wearable speaker that you wear like a watch that has a maximum volume level of
3w and will work all day on a charge.
it's ideal for the job as by putting it on your right wrist when you raise your
hand to operate the glasses it is automatically positioned within 2 or 3
inches from your ear and is really clear to hear.
the battery issue is a really strange one, i have never seen any other device
lose so much battery whilst turned off.
i initially thought i had a faulty unit, but after communicating with Envision
they confirmed this is what is happening with all the glasses.
when turned off they lose around 20% of the battery power per day meaning if
you fully charge them and then turn them off if you don't use them for 5 or 6
days they will be dead when you try to turn them on.
that is a rediculous amount of power consumption when something is turned off,
i found a pair of headphones a couple of weeks ago that i hadn't used for more
than 2 years and when i turned them on they still had power.
the way i have got around this which works in 2 ways for me is that i got a
right angled magnetic charging lead, i leave the magnetic tip plugged in the
arm of the glasses all the time so when i have finished using them i put them
in a case with the lid open and magnetise the lead to the tip and they are kept
fully charged for when i want them next.
this is also a good solution for keeping them fully charged whilst out and
about, as the lead is pretty flexible and because it is a right angled magnetic
lead it magnetises to the arm of the glasses and comes straight down instead of
sticking out from the end of the glasses.
you can run the lead inside your clothing and i plug it into a wireless power
bank in a pocket and if the lead was to be caught it will disconnect instead of
ripping the glasses off your head or damaging the power socket in the glasses.
hope this gives you a better idea of what their like.
pete.
