Hi Joe,

I have never heard of the R4. Is it a new one? €Something else for me to
check out.

All the best

Hi,
I'll have a stab at this.

First, how much money do you want to spend? you can start at under 50 pounds,
and go up to 2000.

4 under 200 pounds, there's the Milestone. Rnib sell this device manufactured
in switzerland, it records only in mp3, I can't comment on the resulting
quality. The benefit would be that the machine has voice prompts.

Then there's the edirol machines, r09, r01 and r4. from 250 pounds upwards.
The r4 has a hard drive installed, where as the other models record on to sd
and compact flash cards. These machines don't talk, but the menues don't wrap,
so with organization, they can be used by Visually impaired recordists.

You would need to check the specs of all these machines, but the r1 is larger,
with bigger buttons, more post-recording graphic equalisation but higher
battery consumption. The media for the r1 is compact flash, and in my
experience, more expensive than the sd cards for the r9. Furthermore, you
might experience some difficulty locating cards at 40 write speed for the r1,
as it can't handle quicker cards. In my opinion both edirols have noisy mic
pre-amps, and if that is an issue for you, you may consider a Mic to line
pre-amp to get arround the problem. It may not matter for high noise level
situations, but if say you are recording quiet stuff, then the noise level is
audible.

Then there are the olympus devices, don't know alot about these, but I guess
other listers can tell you about them. or you could calll hagger electronics.
Number in the phone book, internet address www.hagger.co.ukk

The rnib also sell the plextalk, roundabout 500 quid. This machine records
directly on to either cd or flash, and is fully voicing.

There's the Nagra range, probably most expensive, but better build,
proffessional recording machines.

Here's a couple of web sites:

good luck
