Hi Mobeen and list

I have found a solution for creating a desktop icon to run windows mail. The winmail.exe file is indeed in the windows mail folder only it's hidden as a protected system file for some strange reason.

Perform steps 1 to 7 as per the instructions in the original zip file. Then do the following:

Whilst in the windows mail folder. Go into tools, then folder options. Switch to the view tab and then cursor down the list until you find the option for, Hide protected operating system files. By default it is checked. Press the space bar and a warning will come up. Click yes then tab to ok.

If you go to the bottom of the list you will now see winmail.exe. You can now proceed with step 8 in the instructions to create a destop icon. However, once completed you must now hide protected system files again or you'll find loads of clutter in explorer as many system files will now be showing that are usually hidden.

To do this just switch back to windows explorer or if you've closed it just open it again. Go to tools, folder options and the view tab. Again cursor down the list until you find: Hide protected operating system files. Press the space bar to enable. Tab to ok and you're done. The winmail.exe file will be hidden if you look in the windows mail folder, but the shortcut on the desktop can stil find it.

Hope that helps.

Darren.

Hi Shea and all.

Let me investigate. The file location looks correct.

Go to program files and highlight the windows mail folder. press enter to go in to it, then go in to tools.
go to folder options then to the view tab.
arrow through the list of options to show hidden files and folders off and press space to turn it on. Then click ok, that should bring up all the files in the windows mail folder. There should be a file in there called winmail.exe. Press backspace to get out of the folder, then press applications on the windows mail folder and click take ownership. This should grant you ownership of all files in the windows mail folder.

What version of windows 7 are you using? Try creating your shortcut again and let me know if the file can be found. If not, we may have to investigate further, it may be that files are missing? We may as well continue troubleshooting on list in case anyone else has similar issues. Please let me know if the above makes a difference. sometimes the atrib command doesn't change the folder from hidden hense my instructions above to do it manually.

all the best,

Mo.

Hi Mo,

I was extremely happy to hear that there might be a way to get outlook
express to work with windows 7. Though I have outlook, I don't really like it all that much. Anyhow, I downloaded the folder, extracted it, then opened
the instructions file and followed every step exactly. When I went to add
the shortcut to my desktop, I got a message telling me that the file or
program could not be found. So, I am thinking that windows male is not
hidden in my copy of windows 7 for some reason. If there is something else I
can do, I was wondering if you could let me know. Feel free to contact me
off list. Thanks.

Shea

Instructions

Hi All.

Many thanks to all who replied expressing an interest. For those that don't
have the money or the contacts to obtain microsoft outlook, the following
should be very useful. Personally i prefer it over outlook unless you're
working in an enterprise environment as its more light weight.

Download and unzip the following file, the instructions should be fine with
most screen access software, tested with jaws and NVDA. After unzipping,
please read through the instructions file to have an idea of the steps
involved.

Also, for those wishing to have the classic start menu back and classic look
to my computer, download and run the following file. If the source forge
page does not open your download dialogue, click on the direct link on the
page to start your download. When installing, leave all boxes ticked by
default. After installation, your start menu should be back to the classic
menu stile.

%20release/ClassicShellSetup_3_5_1.exe/download?use_mirror=netcologne

As always, all feedback welcome and people are also welcome to contact me
off list.

all the best,

Mo.

Hi Jeff.

What windows7 version are you using? 32bit or 64bit? outlook express
is still there, though its buried in program files as windows mail. It
was never meant to be part of windows7 but still is. I will send you
instructions in due corse on how to reenable it. If you'd also like to
revert back to xp because of the classic look start menu, you should
install classic shell. this excellent little program will revert your
toolbars and start menu back to basic xp stile. I'll wait to hear further
from you.
Mo.

I hate Windows 7 largely because I can't use Outlook Express which I
find easy and logical.

Eudora and Thunderbird seem to behave bizarrely on my machine.

If I go back to XP what is the downside?

Also any other email programmes which work as easily as Outlook
Express out there?

Jeff
