Hello Carol,
You can make free phone calls on the Google Mini. I'll leave others who are
better equipped to do so to tell you what you need to know about setting up.
Best,
Clive

Yep, I'm getting keen.
A couple of questions, please, if I may:
What's the setup process like and does the Google Mini in fact work for free
phonecalls? I have had a number of annoyances when I've had to revamp my Echo
from scratch, putting in wifi yet again. Is this made simple with Google?
Any further info would be most helpful. Thanks.

does this work on the google home mini? if so I must be doing
something wron. I followed the guy's instructions but couldn't find
about and when I put my landline in on the app it said that I would
get verification but nothing happened. so maybe it doesn't work on the
google home mini. Janet

Hi,
Well for anything practical, I'd say Google Home is streets ahead of Amazon
Echo. Walking/driving directions from your location to somewhere else,
finding your nearest plumber and even calling them now, and on and on.
All the best

Hi again,
This is a perfect example of one of the main differences between
Google Home and Amazon Echo. You can get Google Home to phone someone
by saying "Call
01234 567890" straight out of the box. If you want to make phone calls using
Amazon Echo, you first have to register to make calls on the Alexa App.
Best,
Clive

I know that many people on this list are fans of the Google Home Mini
(currently on sale for £39).
In which case you might be interested to know that, as of this morning, calls
to most UK numbers (including mobiles) are now free using Google Home.
Yes, free as in hands-free and cost-free.
I've just had 3 phone calls to and from landlines and mobiles to test this.
Details here: https://support.google.com/googlehome/answer/7363847?
FAQ item: "How much will calls cost? Calls to most U.K. numbers are free".
Just to double check that free really means free, someone who has never setup
any kind of billing has just made a 10 minute call from their Home Mini to my
mobile.
Sure, the quality is not exactly HD calling, but they were wandering all over
their kitchen and I could hear every word. Delay was minimal and there was no
echo.
I tried calling both by person in address book, and also just clearly
speaking the number. You start with: "OK Google, make a phone call", and then
either follow the prompts or just carry on by saying the person's name or
number.
This is also being discussed over on HotUKDeals at
