Previously there was no service through which to watch TV shows online.
So it's not a matter of the BBC having switched, as such, it now has a
comprehensive service that you can access using Flash video or Windows
Media Player.

In order to get the industry - all the various writers, performers,
musicians, production companies etc - to agree to having their shows
available online, the BBC had to negotiate rights. The Digital Rights
Management System protects all these people from copyright theft.

However, there are bits of software and ways round all these things.

There is a lot of talk presently about whether the whole video and music
model of ownership might be flying out of the window anyway in this
online age. Why do we need to have DVD disks or music disks? Why do we
need to own music when its available online ... In whatever form it'll
end up in, unclear presently.

But there are bits of software around that enable you to record from
Flash and other players. How accessible they are I've no idea.

All:

I have just come across this on another list and wonder if anyone knows
any more?
I haven't had time to check it through yet.

I believe that the BBC has switched to its new iPlayer as part of a
"digital rights management" system. If so, then they intentionally do
*not* wish to have their broadcasts accessible to the various kinds of
players (such as
RealPlayer) which enable recording or saving of sound files.

More information about this is available at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBC_iPlayer or by googling "bbc iplayer
drm".

Those of you who pay a mandatory annual stipend to support the BBC may
have opinions about this change, and may wish to express those opinions
in the appropriate venues.
