Well Ray, the whole thing of accessing DTP programs like Quark and Page Maker has always fascinated me, and that's what endears me so much to the Mac. I would be interested in it for all the things I can't do now, not how better it could be to Windows or enhancing what I know already. I had everyone completely tearing their hair out at college because I pushed and pushed to try to understand what things looked like that I wanted to do. And that's why I hit it off with a guy from the Graphics department, because he could lock into my mind and re-produce for me what I wanted to turn out. I must have driven them mad with my obsession to produce every detail on the newspaper front page I was working on.
Next year, I may well return to the Mac to see where it's at with speech. It's a very interesting thread that I like to follow.

Hmmm! Quark! Well Jackie, and maybe I'm being controversial when I say that I do wonder if Quark is for the likes of us! (Tongue in sheek) My problem with vi peopleseeking access to desktop layout problems is that these cannot really be equated to word processing, which I think is what many vi people think of Quark, Publisher (dare I mention it in the same breath) and th the likes. Yes, ok , you have words laid out and formatted, but often in ways that go way beyond what anyone would do with Word or whatever. Still, maybe some effort could be made to give more or any access at all, to the text elements of layout pages. But then, some would say it's enough to save as a word or maybe RTF document. That wouldn't I think address the element of working interactively with those who spend their lives in DTP. More interesting to me is, will Apple and the writers of such audio programs such as Logic and Pro Tools, make them workable with Voice Over? Now, that for me really would be a step forward. That's where I'd really love to get in about complex software to do real page layouts. Blimey I might even have an appetite to go back to my journalism and do the BA Honours if I could get my bloody back sorted out (smile). If only it had been four years ago ... that would have been truly sensational for me!!
