All you say is true but for me the clear question is about
functionality.
Can I read and edit Word documents, including table navigation? can
I read
a PowerPoint presentation? Can I browse complex web pages? Can I
reliably
read email, create email rules and attach and detach files reliably
from
emails?
Do I have access to a free equivalent of Winamp or similar media
player that
is accessible?
I am asking since I don't know the answer to these questions.
However,
functionality is clearly one of the main issues to be considered
when coming
to a decision.

You seem to think that having the screen reader built in to the
operating system is a bad-thing?
However IMHO this ensures that whenever the O.S. is upgraded the
software house has to, absolutely has to, ensure the screen reader
works with the upgrade on the day the upgrade is rolled out.
Does this happen when microsoft rolls out an upgrade or patch?
I Don't think so!
But look, this is a matter of choice, if you want to stick with a
buggy, security flawed system and have to pay each time someone
discovers yet another glitch that has to have another iteration of the
screen reader - well that's fine with me but I will be sticking with
my choice ta everso.

Microsoft to stay out of the Screenreader business. Partly because
they should concentrate on their operating system and partly because
I'm concerned that if Microsoft implemented a Screenreader into the
operating system the Screenreader manufacturers would quicly go out
of business and we'd be left with one dominant Screenreader player.

I think "DOS" perfectly describes what the programmers at Microsoft
do
all day! considering how "Popular" windows is, I would have thought
they would have made it fully accessible by now without the need for
adding expensive software like JAWS. It is a fact that most people
who
use Apple Macs, swear by them, unlike the rest of us, that swear at
Microsoft!
