This is just a comment on a feature I have now enabled in my Echo to help
control my Honeywell smart radiator thermostats.
I have had a set of Honeywell Evohomeradiator valves in my home for a few
years now. With this it is possible to control the temperature in each room,
or zone, to what you would like at what times you would like. There are many
other manufacturers offering similar systems, such as Hive etc. This has
worked OK, but I did not find the phone interface very blind friendly.
My Amazon Echo has now had a new skill enabled which interfaces with lots of
different smart home devices including the Honeywell Evohome set. The setup
was relatively straight forward and only took a few minutes.
My ability to control my system has been transformed.
I can say "alexa increase the living room temperature to 22 degrees" and it
happens.
I can say "alexa turn the hot water on" and it does so.
Really an excellent skill.
Having said that I do fail to see that the new communications skills just
released will be of much use at all. It seems to me to be just yet another
way of communicating, along with the existing phone call, Facebook,
FaceTime, what's-app etc. etc. .
Some may like it but it just seems a little bit of overkill to me.
