I have heard of Goldwave and Audacity - will look into them both.
I'm guessing I'll need a USB microphone too but will I need a seperate
soundcard?

Sarah, have you tried Gold Wave? This is easy both for recording and editing
purposes. Or another alternative is Audacity. Both these programmes are free.
