I might be way off the mark here but I've been told the user name and password to access many routers is very often by default admin in both cases. Hope this is of some help.

Good luck,
Marie

Hello Sandra,
Thankyou very much for taking the trouble to reply. What I have is an alcatel Speedtouch 510. The alternativeI was offered was a USB modem but I chose what I thought was the easier option. All I had to do was plug in the ethernet cable to the PC, connect the other cable from the router to the microfilter and I was on line! It appears that they had pre- configured the router with everything needed - although the data was included in an
accompanying letter.

However I thought that if I inadvertently reset the router it would be helpful to have a backup -
hence my attempts to access it.
Whatever I enter in the fields I always get "http/1.0 401. Authorization required" A Google search for that message +"Speedtouch 510" gives 7 results and I am working my way through them in the hope that they may provide some enlightenment. It does suggest though
that these Speedtouch routers are liable to have this problem.

As I mentioned in my earlier message the ISP's Tech Support could only suggest trying a different browser. I suppose I could install Firefox and give it a try, but how accessible I
would find it with Hal 9.02 I do not know.

i am beginning to wish that I had not even tried to access the router!

Hi Douglas,
Sounds like I could be using the same, or a similar router to yours. It's
a one port Speed Touch STV6 or something like that. When I'd plugged it
into the ethernet port, telephone line and power, all I had to do was
launch Internet Explorer and then type in my user name and password from
my ISP that I've always used to connect to the internet. I then got a
message saying I had configured the router successfully and close the
window and from then on I was on line. You've probably tried this already
but I thought I'd mention it just in case.

Cheers,
Sandra.
