Days like that happen, it’s very rare I don’t fly two ship anymore, no fun
flying single.
Did you see two aircraft coming down on you last night from an higher alt,
while you was flying a MkV, hope it did not startle you too much ;)?

Well done. I just had one of those evenings where you feel like just
resigning yourself to flying bombers. Flying with a wingman would have made
all the difference.
I can't make a note of the Spit IX economy setting as I dont own one yet but
I shall certainly write down the one for the Spit V. The pilots notes seem
to say Max Range is obtained with Weak mixture & 1700rpm at 160 IAS

We had a slow start to the day yesterday afternoon, but still managed to get
4 kills in the MkV, one was a manoeuvre kill :).
Why do guys not fly the Spitfire MkV more often, it’s a great aircraft :)?
We kept the best for the night sortie :).
Taking off in MkIX’s we set a patrol route over the front and enemy lines.
After being flying for around 40 mins with no enemy in view we had a report
of an attack on a bridge north of us, we flew to a likely intercept point. On
reaching that point Witch spotted two low (on the deck) fast moving aircraft
flying in a SW direction. So from our 20,000ft position we set off after our
prey, we dived down with Witch taking point and me covering. As the enemy
were flying in a fingertip formation, Witch saddled up on the rear wingman on
the right I took the leader on the left. As we closed rapidly they had no
idea we were there, Witch settled down and opened fire on the wingman and he
went down straight away pilot kill. The leader did not respond so Witch slid
in behind him and proceeded to shoot him down. But he did manage to bailout,
more fortunate than his wingman. It was a perfect bounced on two K4’s :).

Alas the adventure was not over, Witch called out that he had only 15 gallons
of fuel left, must admit that being low on fuel had not entered my mind doh!
Our nearest airfield was nearly 60km away, not good. We did think of landing
at the allied airfield objective which was closer at 30km, but after
confirming our exact location we climbed to 10,000ft and decided to head for
our proper airfield. So now what’s the real economy setting for the Merlin
lol. So we went 2000rpm, 0 boost, 220mph, to cut along story short we made
it, Witch had 3 gallons left, I had 2 1/2 gallons :). After landing the VR
headsets were off and MkIX manual was out, and found out we could have gone
better at 1800rpm, -4 boost, 30 gallons an hour :).
Two kills, learned things, and rtb a good night all round.
