No More War! - At the slightest suggestion of an enemy presence, civilians
were regularly shot, women were routinely raped, and the soldiers stole
what they wanted from the villagers...Women were gang raped, sodomized,
and then murdered. According to Bilton and Sim, one woman was killed when
a gun was thrust into her vagina and then fired. Vietnamese were beaten
with fists and rifle butts, tortured, and bayoneted. Some were scalped.
Still others had "C Company" or the figure of the ace-of-spades cut onto
their chests. Lieutenant Calley did nothing to stop the depredations.
Lieutenant Stephen Brooks, commanding the 2nd Platoon, did nothing to stop
the massacre--indeed, like Calley, he often joined his men...A clutch of
old women and children were herded together and shot. Another 80 villagers
were brought to an open area where Lieutenant Calley told the soldiers,
"You know what I want you to do with them," and walked away. Returning
several minutes later, he found the villagers still standing about. He
shouted to the men guarding them, "I want them dead. . . . Waste them."
Calley, Private Paul Meadlo, and radioman Charles Sledge opened fire..
