If I recall correctly your display resolution, and your texture size probably have a lot to do with it.. Every time I would upgrade, 3ddesktop would be slower until I messed with my texturesize settings to make it use less ram and take a faster sample. Is there a reason you prefer using 3ddesktop instead of something like compiz? I loved 3ddesktop, and I'm very grateful to the author for having written it, but I don't believe that it's been under any active development for years. It was definitely ahead of it's time, but it's time was about 5 years ago before beryl/compiz were usable. I would venture a guess that Brad (the author) probably doesn't use 3ddesktop anymore. Compiz is infinitely more flexible, and puts real 3d / opengl right into the window manager instead of as a magical smoke and mirrors overlay. Ubuntu has even switched to using it as the default window manager when there is 3d support. It's not flashy in it's default config, but if you install the "Advanced desktop effects settings" package you can quickly set up a plane or a cube with your desktops mapped to it..
