This is the second preparatory email for Round 4 of 30 Days to Better Shime. The first message is copied below. Just writing to make sure you've downloaded the materials and set your practice pad and batchi in a convenient place. Only two days until we dive in! Maz and I head out on tour this morning but I'll be emailing from the road. Let me know if you have any questions getting ready to start. More soon! Kris ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Kristofer Bergstrom <kris@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Date: Tue, Dec 21, 2010 at 10:12 PM Subject: Thank you for joining us for 30 Days to Better Shime, Round 4! To: 30days_round4@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Hello taiko friends! This is the first email to the 30days_round4 list. 46 of us are on board for the January session of 30 Days to Better Shime! The 30 Days to Better Shime program is a month-long series of daily, 15-20 minute exercises. The program begins with a starting point test, then focuses on coordination, moving into more complicated techniques, timing, and even a bit of composition. The course ends with a final test so you can compare your progress. Your first task is to prep your materials (a workbook and audio files). We'll start practicing on Jan 1. I'll send emails to the list a few times a week to check in. I am available for questions of any kind (I love talking taiko!) for all of January. Two-Part Prep We start Jan 1 and I want everyone to jump in from day 1! I'll be on tour from Dec 29 and while I'm hoping I'll have daily email access, I'd like us to get all the prep squared away with plenty of time to spare, so I'm not inundated with questions on Dec 31. Please do the following two things in the next few days to prepare for the program. 1) Download workbook and audio files Go to http://onensemble.org/2008/12/30-days-to-better-shime/ and follow the instructions download your workbook and audio files. Read pages 3 and 4 of the workbook. Take a test listen to a few of the audio files and make sure you're all set. If you've downloaded the files in the recent past, you don't need to download them again. Note, however, there have been a few tweaks and the audio file numbers have changed since the original, 2008 version. If in doubt, feel free to download again. Also feel free to share the workbook or recordings with friends. They are released under a copyleft license that allows free sharing. 2) Ready your drumpad and sticks I use very light western drumsticks (size 7A, for what it's worth) for most of this kind of practice, but anything goes. Lighter wood "shime batchi" are fine. If you don't have a drumming practice pad, you can pick one up at any music store, or better yet, make your own by gluing an old, rubbery mousepad to a piece of scrap wood. Anything bouncy will be fine. Again, please don't put this off. We want to get all this logistical stuff out of the way so that picking up your sticks and practicing on Jan 1 is quick, easy, and fun! Let me know if you have questions. I'll check in again before we begin. Thanks again everyone! Happy holidays! Kris
