When I compare the sound generated by ZynAddSubFX and Yoshimi for the
xiz-file attached to this mail (after opening the attached xmz-file), it
sounds noticably different even though Yoshimi is said to generate the
same sound as ZynAddSubFX. Even when I compare instruments in the
default instrument bank, the sound differs. It is possible for any of
you to reproduce this? :'( Are the synthesizing algorithms slightly
different in Yoshimi and ZynAddSubFX?

Btw, I forgot: I'm using ZynAddSubFX v2.4.3 and Yoshimi v1.1.0 with a
linux-rt kernel.

These are 30 cycles of a C5 note, displayed in Jaaa with peak hold.
Yoshimi on the left, Zyn on the right. Master volume is turned to
the lowest possible setting in both synths.
Same versions as used by Andreas.

So yes, they look and sound different. Yoshimi sounds a bit brighter.
Judging from sound and spectrograms (and peak values), the
generating algorithms aren't identical; though I don't recall any
such changes being intended or announced here on the list.

I can say with some certainty that changes in sound were definitely not
intended or wanted. Cal frequently asked people to check any changes he made
for the sound. Indeed at one point I regret I sent him on a wild goose chase
because the startup default for Zyn. was to have reverb on, but for Yoshi. it
was off (more sensible). I hadn't noticed that and thought there had been a
change. Turning on reverb on the default voice produced identical results (to my
ears).

I have versions back to 0.036 but the earlier ones don't run on the
current debian testing. I'll try to find time to fire up and older machine with
something like debian wheezy and see if I can recompile these and do some
comparisons.

Also, does anyone know if the sounds produced by Zyn. have changed over time.
Hmmm. Interesting. It seems I have an archived copy of Zyn. 2.2.1. I'll try and
get that up and running again too.

Personally I'm quite concerned about this, so will try to dig out whatever info
I can.

Say you have a poem and I have a tune.
Exchange them and we can both have a poem, a tune, and a song.
