OK. So let's stay with the latter, setting intentionality aside.

Just WHAT is the effect when consciousness is caused? Must a person
report it? And what is the cause?

I'm in a chair, eyes closed, breathing regularly. You ask: "Are you
conscious?" I answer: "Sort of."

What is the cause, the effect. and how does the cause produce the
effect?
