Hi everyone --- 'Tis your night-owl with the Christmas count report, and then some. If graded scholastically, I'd give my time a C. 24 species is kind of blah to me. But I had a few decent sights to mention, like Sunday, while heading to work. I checked out the river by the Senior's Center, got the 3 ringbill ducks again, inc. that half-hybrid. Then upon leaving, a flock of 10- 12 gulls headed north, scoping them carefully, I nailed the BLACKBACK again!!! Nice adult, wings jet black against the others. I was a happy Christmas bird counter. But anyway, here are my stats for Saturday: 24 species, 284 individuals, oddly, 24 miles in 4.25 hours. (lots of 2's and 4's there) Sadly, I was unable to check out my bosses property, for I would've probably gotten the only RB Nuthatches there. So here's the list: Bald Eagle, 1 Hairy Woodpecker, 2 Tree Sparrow, 115 Cooper's Hawk, 2 Blue Jay, 20 SONG SPARROW, 2 Redtail Hawk, 1 Crows, 28 Juncos, 66 Kestrel, 2 Horned Lark, 6 Snow Buntings, 31 Rock Pigeon, 30 Chickadees, 29 Cardinals, 9 Mourning Doves, 47 WB Nuthatch, 8 House Finch, 8 Red-belly Wood. 7 Robin, 9 Goldfinch, 8 Downy Wood., 6 Starling, 26 House Sparrow, ~70 I think you can see what my highlight was, and the 2 may have been a pair. They were about 100 ft. apart. My only Flock highlight was pishing out ~ 30 juncos, 25 tree sparrows, 2 cardinals, 4 chickadees, 2 goldfinches and a robin. Weather had a big role in the open country birding. Not that many field birds, but the 8 snow buntings at Bradley Marsh were nice. Nothing really odd happened, though seeing a fox squirrel was kind of a treat. Don't see those much anymore. No cats to speak of, in case that topic needs to be brought up. Weather consisted of overcast skies, occasional very light precip., constant north wind, 10-15 mph. temp. ~ lo 20's. Very little walking. No owling. Had 11 sightings of tree sparrows, with that many individuals, and that about sums up my day.
