Thought any chasers in WI would like to know of this latest Texas find of a new to the U.S. species. Here is a forwarded note from the TEXBIRDS list. The site referenced is a mere ten minute walk from where we're parked. I'm thinking this is one we might chase. Tom Sykes (currently in Mission Texas) sykes@xxxxxxxxxx tomandcarolsykes.blogspot.com Forwarded message: *********************************** Ah, cell phones! Rick Snider's and Rick Nirschl's finding of the new U.S. species, Bare-throated Tiger-heron, at Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley SP-WBC was fantastic for 11 of us. If you come for it, the bird was seen off the Main Mission Canal that runs east-west, directly behind the Park headquarters. The bird is a tree-percher and was found about 100yds west down the Canal bank, from its intersection with the Park's main entrance road. It was seen on both sides of the Canal. Park at the Park's parking lot and walk down to and onto the levee (its a short walk) to about 30yds west of the yellow valve structure. Do not drive onto and try to park on the levee, as the Border Patrol will ask you to leave, and it is very difficult to turn around on this one-car-width road. Bring a scope. Please stay on DESIGNATED trails only. The levee puts you high enough that you can see the trees to the south and the field to the north. Again, Mary has posted photos of this bird at http://marybirds.blogspot.com/2009/12/bare-throated-tiger-heron-hidalgo.html . David T.
