This afternoon at about 2PM I had a frustratingly short observation of a juvenile Western Sandpiper from the boat launch at Vern Wolf Lake at Bong SRA, Kenosha Co. I only observed the bird for about three minutes before it was flushed (along with most of the other shorebirds present) by a Red-tailed Hawk and I watched it disappear to the west mixed in with a Pectoral Sandpiper flock. I was at the site until about 4pm and it had not returned at that point. Additional details of this sighting are included in the species comments portion of my eBird checklist available here: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S15263759 Incidentally, my reason for visiting Bong was to work the smartweed for ammodramus sparrows. Despite outstanding looking habitat, I didn't flush much more than a few Marsh Wrens and a couple of Sora along with loads of Swamp Sparrows. I think this site will produce them in the next few weeks, it may require some persistence though... Good birding.
