It includes the city of Lake Mills and the rather large Rock Lake. The day of
the count was Dec. 15th. On the 15th, the last parts of Rock Lake were
freezing. There were but a few pools of open water near the east shore. We
were fortunate to catch some of the last waterbirds as they were departing for
the season. If the count had been a day or two earlier, there would have been
even more waterfowl. It was a good day for finding birds. But, because we
were short on field birders, the total number of individuals per species was
not impressively high. Next year there will be even fewer field birders from
the present crop. This count is quite near Madison and other areas where
active birders live. If anyone should want to help with this count in 2010,
your assistance would be MUCH appreciated. The Waterloo Count began in 2000
and, over these past 10 years, it has proven to be one of the richest bird
circles in the state. It would be sad to lose this count.
