Here's a link to some photos from some of the WSO Convention field trips, centered this year in Siren, WI. http://www.pbase.com/trschultz/2009wso_convention (pictures on two pages) On the first page are a few photos of the adult Swainson's Hawk that we observed along Drawbridge Road in Polk County -- not far from the St. Croix River. The photos are not great, but we were fortunate to observe a flying adult on three separate occasions over the course of about 45 minutes -- at two different locations along this road. These were likely the same bird, but who knows for sure??! Near the latest location where we had seen an adult (along the railroad tracks toward the end of this dead end road) we also saw a perched immature Swainson's Hawk. (See Jennifer's nice photo of this bird -- posted yesterday.) Presumably these birds were migrating together during the strong west winds of the day before, and perhaps got blown further eastward than they had planned. Perhaps others have some additional photos of these birds that they could post, as I'm sure that a number of good shots were taken. The last several photos show a family of Black Bears that the people on the Crex Meadows field trip observed on Saturday morning. They were in the yard of a home adjacent to the wildlife refuge that had bird feeders. Unfortunately, one of the cubs had a yellow plastic "globe" of some kind stuck on its head! We don't know if it was ultimately able to extricate itself from this predicament, but the DNR was notified. The lady living in the house called out that she wanted someone to try to remove the globe from the young bear's head -- but that would've been a bit crazy with the mother bear right nearby!!! Thanks to everyone who was involved in setting up, running or participating in this convention. It sure appeared to me that everyone had a wonderful time birding northwestern Wisconsin!
