Today the Snowy Owl in the Buena vista grasslands was easily seen from CTH W. In the morning it was on the south side of CTH W about .5 miles east of Elm Road and about 4 P.M. this afternoon I saw it perched on a power pole very near CTH W between Elm Road and Townline Rd (no binoculars needed!). I was unable to find any Prairie Chickens after 4 hours of searching, but there were other interesting birds in the grasslands including 2 Northern Shrikes, several Rough-legged Hawks, a Bald Eagle, a large flock of Wild Turkeys and the many feeder birds at the home on Townline Rd. The thistle feeder at this home was loaded with Common Redpolls. By driving a little south and scoping back at the treeline which runs east from the backyard of the house I was able to see the Red-headed Woodpecker found by the WSO field trip last weekend. I did swing over to Wood County to look for Golden Eagles but didn't find any here or at Bear Bluff. There were a couple of suspects on Ball Rd. but too distant to ID even with the scope. I was pleased to see 11 White-winged Crossbills along Ball Rd about .25 mi east of Cranberry Rd. Not a good day for my two "target" species, but a beautiful day of birding with pleasant weather.
