Cranes were flying here, too, though not as many as farther east,
apparently. I heard the first ones (there were 70 of them) earlier than
usual, at 8:10 a.m. and wondered if they were taking advantage of the
strong NW wind. Usually, I see them later when they're catching
thermals. Another 22 came over at 8:48 and about 50 at 10:28. All these
were heard from inside.

I then headed out to the garden from 10:45 to 12:33 and counted 522
cranes in 12 flocks. Most of them were quite a ways to the west over
Rock Lake, though a few came right over the house. All were flying very
high.

Interestingly, though I was out gardening again from 1:07 to 4:32 p.m.,
I didn't hear a single crane (in contrast to Saturday afternoon's 966
cranes from 12:50 to 2:45 p.m.). I got more gardening done, but by late
afternoon I could have used more bird breaks.
