I made a run up to Rhinelander today to add Bohemian waxwing and northern hawk-owl to my year list. The hawk-owl just graced me with a fly by as I drove down Highway 17 around 7:30 a.m. John Rasmussen and I found a flock of about 50 Bohemians with a dozen cedar waxwings in Rhinelander in someone's yard fruit tree (sorry, can't tell you what street we were on, I'm a stranger there myself). Two weeks ago I birded the feeders in Alvin and the forest roads off of Highway 55 in the Nicolet National Forest. I had gray jays, pine and evening grosbeaks, a black-backed woodpecker, and other more common birds. Happy New Year! Also any chances at seeing any of the following within a half-hour drive of Rhinelander would be appreciated. Black-backed Woodpecker, Boreal Chickadee, Pine Grosbeak, Red Crossbill, Snowy Owl.
