[wisb] Re: OT: Earth Worms in WI - native or non-native?

I attended a presentation on this topic this past spring, done by a woman at
the DNR (whose name I cannot currently remember) who specializes in
earthworm ecology. In essence, she stated that one could easily identify
areas in the northwoods where the earthworms had become established by
finding extensive patches of Pennsylvania sedge. I believe her contention
was that the grassy-looking Penn. sedge was able to survive (and thrive)
because of its high silica content -- which made it inedible to the worms --
while other native plants were being eaten and eliminated from those areas.

And, yes, she stated that virtually all of the earthworms in Wisconsin are
non-native and invasive, and that she was finding that the areas of spread
were primarily centered at locations where there were boat landings -- where
fishermen had likely disposed of their unused worms.

As the article (that Anne referred to) mentioned, the presenter stated that
there were likely going to be many adverse impacts on the ground-nesting
birds due to the loss of native groundcover plants.

Thanks, Ryan and Tom. That's the article I was thinking of.

The WisBirdNet is also a great resource!

Subject: [wisb] OT: Earth Worms in WI - native or non-native?

A friend and I are debating whether earth worms are native to WI or not. I
seem to remember reading something about ovenbirds and other birds that nest
in leaf litter losing the litter due to the introduction of earth worms,
especially in northern WI. Can someone please send me some info on this?

Thanks,
