I spent the morning hiking towards and around Mauthe Lake. If there was
anything out of the ordinary it was the abundance of woodpeckers. Through
most of this long hike, I could hear four types of woodpeckers: Downys, Red
Bellied, Plieated and Flickers. For the most part the Downys were fairly
quiet except for knocking on trees. The other three were heard throughout the
walk, calling and drumming. I even scared up a Pileated Woodpecker foraging
along some fallen trees. I saw a few Yellow Rumped Warblers along the lake,
near the campgrounds, and at the two bridges that cross the two streams at
Mauthe, One had a Chipping Sparrow calling from a tree and the other had a few
Tree Swallows flying in the air. I could occasionally hear Sandhill Cranes,
Crows and Blue Jays and the ubiquitous Robins and Cardinals were also there.Â
