I returned to Horicon today to view the White-faced Ibis that Dave S.
alerted me to last evening (Thanks Dave!), and while I was there, several
other birders mentioned they were not finding the Black-necked Stilts.
Indeed, I did not see any along STH49 or at the boardwalk pond, although
other birders told me they had seen one along 49 and two at the boardwalk
pond at different times in the morning.
Since today was the complete opposite of yesterday weather-wise, I decided
to try Old Marsh Road again. There were two Black-necked Stilts near the
photo blind which is closest to the Point Road entrance, and I continued
west. Along the way I heard two American Bitterns and a very close and loud
Virginia Rail. When I got to a large pond on the north side of Old Marsh
Road that was not quite to the pumping station, I found ten Black-necked
Stilts in that one pond! I continued down to the pumping station and found
nothing new, but at least three Black-necked Stilts flew west. When I got
back to the "pond of ten" , it was now the "pond of five." When I passed the
photo blind there were none. My impression is that these newly arrived
stilts have not yet decided on where they want to breed and are just
exploring and fattening up after their long journey. Who knows where they
might be found tomorrow!
